US President Joe Biden intends to run for a second term in the upcoming presidential election in 2024, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
The agency said, citing “many aides and allies” of the US president, that Biden is preparing to launch his re-election project months after the midterm congressional elections scheduled for next November.
The agency added that Biden is sticking to the re-nomination despite his low popularity, while several polls show that Democrats would rather run for reelection than a 79-year-old incumbent.
Three Democratic members of Congress have recently proposed clearing the way for Biden’s younger successor, while several other Democratic lawmakers have clearly refused to support his re-election. According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Biden’s approval rating is only about 40%.
Three-quarters of Democrats polled by CNN last month said they want another candidate in 2024, while a quarter of Democratic voters said they didn’t believe Biden could win again.
And last month, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had decided to run for reelection in 2024, without disclosing the substance of his decision.
