Blinken hands over to NATO two protocols concluded by Washington on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken handed over to NATO two protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to the alliance after they were signed by the US.

“Today I handed over to NATO two U.S. Conclusion Protocols, the latest step in the process for the United States to conclude an agreement for Canada and Sweden to join NATO,” Blinken tweeted on Thursday.

Notably, US President Joe Biden signed the accession protocols for Finland and Sweden to NATO on August 9, a few days after they were ratified by the US Senate.

It is noteworthy that Finland and Sweden submitted two applications to join NATO in May last year against the background of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. More than 20 out of 30 NATO member states have ratified the protocols on the accession of the two countries to the alliance.
