Blinken and Guterres talk about export of Ukrainian grain and situation in Sudan

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed with UN Secretary General António Guterres a deal on the export of Ukrainian grain and the situation in Sudan.

And a US State Department statement Thursday said the two sides “discussed the importance of continuing to defend the United Nations Charter in light of Russia’s (aggressive) war against Ukraine.”

Blinken praised the efforts of Guterres and the promotion of the initiative to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

And the statement continued: “And on Sudan, Blinken pledged to continue working with the Secretary General to push for a permanent cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians, and guarantees of access for UN humanitarian agencies.”

In addition, Blinken highlighted “the United States’ support for an inclusive government and ensuring respect for women and girls against the backdrop of recent restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghan women working for the United Nations.”

Blinken also assured Guterres of U.S. support for the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
