Biden: Delivery of Abrams tanks to Kyiv will take time

US President Joe Biden confirmed on Wednesday that Washington had decided to transfer 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv, but their delivery would take time.

Speaking at the White House, Biden said that it would take time to get the Abrams tanks to Kyiv, but that the US would quickly begin training Ukrainian military personnel on them.

He stressed that these weapons “will play an important role” in the military operation in Ukraine.

The US President also said that Ukrainian forces are preparing for a counteroffensive in the Donbas.

“As spring approaches, Ukrainian forces are defending the territory they control and preparing for additional counterattacks,” Biden said.

According to the President of the United States, in order to properly conduct an offensive, Ukrainian forces need to “improve the ability to maneuver in open terrain, as well as provide a strong deterrent and defense against Russian aggression in the long term.”

A US White House spokesman said the United States hopes arms deliveries to Ukraine will not only help Kyiv defend, but also allow it to “dominate” lost territories, including Crimea.

He explained: “We want to make sure they have the right ability to not only defend themselves against Russia… but also the ability to take back sovereign territory, Crimea is Ukraine.”
