Biden Assures US Has No Intent to Topple Russian Government

Politico reported that US President Joe Biden told nine Bucharest countries behind closed doors during his visit to Poland last February that Washington was not seeking a change of leadership in Russia.

The newspaper, citing sources, reported that Biden said that the goal of the situation in Ukraine was not to change power in the Russian Federation.

The newspaper adds that after Biden’s clandestine visit to Kyiv last week, he traveled to Warsaw, where he delivered a pep talk about European unity. But the next day, in a private meeting, Biden had to remind the Bucharest Nine, “the group of Eastern European countries closest to Russia’s borders,” that the point of the situation in Ukraine was not to end the Putin regime.

However, the US President last year, also during his visit to Poland, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power.” Later, the White House had to clarify that Biden did not call for a change in Russian leadership.

In February, Warsaw hosted the Bucharest Summit of the heads of nine states of NATO’s “eastern wing”: Bulgaria, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic with the participation of US President Joe Biden.
