US President Joe Biden announced during a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Jeddah that at least $1.45 billion in annual aid will be provided to Jordan between 2023 and 2029.
A joint statement after the two leaders met on the sidelines of the summit said the memorandum reflects the political commitment of the United States to support Jordan, its stability and the strength of the partnership between the two countries, and aims to meet the needs of Jordan and support the economic reform agenda announced by King Abdullah II.
President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ absolute support for Jordan as a major ally of the United States and a force for peace in the region, and for the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue working towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace between Israel and the Palestinians based on the two-state solution and stressed the need to preserve the historic status quo in Jerusalem’s holy sites.
President Biden stressed the important role of the Hashemite guardianship in this, and Abdullah II praised the United States support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
On the other hand, Biden announced that Saudi Arabia intends to pump up investments in Jordan and Egypt during his speech at the Security and Development Summit in Jeddah.
“Finally, thanks to the efforts of many, new energy projects linking the countries of the region, a new free trade agreement and investments between neighbors, such as Saudi investments in Egypt and Jordan, have been agreed,” he said in his speech.
“The more we build these connections, the more we see benefits for our people, and they will grow,” he added.
