US President Joe Biden once again lashed out at the US Supreme Court after its decision to abolish the right to abortion in the country.
“I share the public anger at this extreme trial,” Biden said at a meeting with state governors on Friday, noting that the court wanted to set America back and restrict rights.
Under former President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court took over.
“Right now we have no votes in the Senate,” Biden said.
The President expressed hope that this situation would change after the November elections.
The Biden-led Democratic Party currently has a slim majority in the Senate, and the Democrats only hold 50 seats, exactly half, so the House of Representatives is regularly slowed down by the so-called kiosk function.
And it wasn’t just the Democrats who were behind the suspension: Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Senator Kirsten Sinema of Arizona had previously opposed the law.
The blocking feature is a more than 100-year-old rule that says that for many bills, 60 out of 100 senators must agree to end debate before a vote can be taken in the House of Congress.
Biden warned that Republicans could rally enough next fall to push a nationwide bill to ban abortion through Congress.
Last week, the Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion, saying it was unconstitutional, and because there is no state law to protect the right, legislative power is now in the hands of the states.
The court also significantly slowed the pace of Biden’s climate agenda with its ruling on Thursday.
At its next hearing, the court will consider, among other things, a suffrage case that could have serious implications for the 2024 presidential election.
The Conservative-controlled Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade in 1973, overturned constitutional guarantees for the right to terminate a pregnancy and allowed US states to regulate the practice themselves.
Nearly half of the 50 states plan to ban or significantly restrict abortion in their territories. So far, US authorities have not been allowed to regulate abortions in the first trimester, and in the second trimester they have only been allowed to intervene to protect the health of the mother.
