Belgrade Pledges to Safeguard Its People in the Event of Escalated Kosovo Crisis

Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic warned that politicians must find a peaceful solution in light of the escalation in Kosovo and Metohija, otherwise the Serbian state will protect its citizens.

On Wednesday, Vucevic arrived in the garrison town of Raska, located near the administrative border with Kosovo and Metohija. Accompanied by his command, he inspected the army, gendarmerie and counter-terrorist units of the Ministry of the Interior stationed in Raška, Novy Pazar and the Kopaonik mountain range.

“The Serbian army and the personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are successfully fulfilling all the tasks assigned to them by the state, and in the political sphere we must do everything possible to find a peaceful political solution. If this does not happen, the state of Serbia will protect its citizens by all means, ”the Defense Ministry quotes Vucevic.

Earlier this morning, the minister said that in the current escalation in northern Kosovo, Belgrade’s red line would be the killing of Serbs and their deportation by Kosovar Albanians.

On Wednesday, the Chief of the Serbian General Staff, General Milan Moiselovic, visited units of the deployed armed forces that are in the highest degree of combat readiness. According to the Ministry of Defense, he was convinced that the Serbian army was “ready, motivated and fully trained to quickly and decisively carry out all the tasks that will be assigned to it.”

Thousands of Serbs gathered on Wednesday morning to protest in front of the municipalities of Zvecan and Leposavić in northern Kosovo as organizers urged them to peacefully protest. Clashes between local residents and security forces killed 52 Serbs and at least 30 NATO soldiers on Monday. NATO’s contingent for Kosovo had previously cordoned off stand-alone buildings with rows of barbed wire, behind which heavily armored Kosovo Albanian policemen had barricaded themselves.
