Beijing: Our military won’t sit idly by if Pelosi visits Taiwan

On Monday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry threatened that Beijing would take “strong and effective” action if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decides to visit Taiwan.

“If Pelosi visits Taiwan, it will be a flagrant interference in China’s internal affairs and will lead to very serious consequences,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a briefing on Monday.

“China’s People’s Liberation Army will not sit idly by,” he added.

Noting that Pelosi’s visit to Taipei would destabilize the situation in the Taiwan Strait and deal a blow to Sino-US relations, the spokesman said, “China will certainly take strong and effective countermeasures.”

Pelosi, who embarked on an Asian tour yesterday, said she would visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan during her tour, but did not mention Taiwan.

Earlier, the American media did not rule out the possibility of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, but Pelosi herself refused to comment on this information, citing security concerns.
