German Foreign Minister Annaline Bierbock ruled out easing sanctions on Russia, stressing the need to ensure that her country does not split between supporters and opponents of sanctions, given their implications for Germany.
During a conversation with citizens in Bremen, Beerbock considered that the lifting of sanctions “does not guarantee gas supplies from Russia, but double blackmail awaits us.”
“Therefore, we will also maintain these sanctions and at the same time ensure that there is no division in society,” Beerbock was quoted by the DPA, stressing that Germany will support Ukraine “for as long as it needs our support.”
Bierbock has previously said that there is currently no way to negotiate with Russia and also rejected calls for a ceasefire and talks called for by a group of German intellectuals and celebrities.
