Austrian Foreign Ministry: Refusal of Russian gas is non-negotiable

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said that the question of renunciation of Russian gas is not worth it.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in Brussels to attend a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union, Schallenberg said that Austria had said from the very beginning that sanctions against Russia should hit Russia and should not backfire on the EU itself.

“We also knew it would be painful, which is something we talked about from the beginning,” he said.

He added: “The key word here is gas. There was a heated discussion before that we should refuse to receive gas (from Russia) and we, like a number of other countries, clearly said that this issue is not discussed, because it will deal with us a lot. Here we have to be realistic, even if it’s not emotionally pleasant.”
