At least 20 people have died and 30 are missing after a boat capsized in a river in Pakistan.

Pakistani authorities have announced the death of at least 20 people, most of them women, and the loss of about 30 more when the boat they were traveling on capsized in the Indus River in the center of the country.

More than 100 people were on board the boat, heading for a wedding ceremony on Monday, before it capsized in a river in the Sadiq Labad district of central Pakistan, a Pakistani government statement said.

She added that the boat was overflowing with passengers, mostly women and children, when it capsized, noting that about 90 people were rescued.

“At the moment, the bodies of 20 passengers have been recovered from the river, while the exact number of passengers on the boat is still unknown, but it is believed that about 30 people were missing,” she added.
