The Mexican authorities carried out a series of arrests of drug cartels in western Mexico, destroying cars and shops in two states, which was an obvious response.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not specify the identities of the detainees in the state of Jalisco, but said the soldiers clashed with the perpetrators, including leaders, at a meeting between the two gangs in Jalisco and also in Guanajuato.
Photos have surfaced on social media showing men grabbing cars and buses and setting them on fire in the middle of the roads. Others offered burned-out small retail stores.
López Obrador said authorities were still deployed to the regions on Wednesday and were awaiting more arrests.
Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said no one was hurt in the devastation that followed the arrests.
The area is dominated by the Jalisco gang, whose leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “Mencho”, is one of the most wanted figures by Mexican and American authorities. There was no indication that Osegira was present at the encounter.
