The Peruvian Football Federation announced on Saturday that Argentina’s Ricardo Gareca has stepped down from coaching with the national team after seven successful years with Blankeroja.
The 64-year-old Argentine nicknamed “El Tigre” led Peru to the 2018 World Cup, 36 years after Pecolor’s last participation in the World Cup.
He also contributed to Peru’s participation after they finished fifth in the combined group of South American qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, an international addition, but failed to clear the hurdle against Australia, losing 5-4. on penalties after they drew at the Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar on 13 June.
Peru, ranked 22nd in the world and led by Gareka since 2015, failed to qualify for the World Cup for the sixth time after 1930, 1970, 1978, 1982 and 2018.
Gareca became a living icon of Peru as he led the team to the 2019 Copa América final, losing 1-3 to hosts Brazil.
The Peruvian Federation has not revealed the alternative name of Gareki.
