AP: British ship intercepts Iranian missiles bound for Yemen

A British Royal Navy ship hijacked a shipment of advanced Iranian missiles in the Gulf of Oman earlier this year on its way to Yemen, officials said Thursday.

“The confiscation of this shipment is evidence of Tehran’s support for the Houthi rebels in Yemen,” the Associated Press reported, citing unnamed officials.

The British Embassy in the UAE described the seizure of surface-to-air missiles and engines for land-attack cruise missiles as “the first time that a warship of the British Navy has intercepted a ship with such advanced weapons from Iran.”

UK Secretary of State for the Armed Forces James Hebe said: “The UK will continue to work to maintain a lasting peace in Yemen and is committed to international maritime security so that commercial traffic can proceed safely without disruption.”
