Americans demand arrest of Russian hockey star Ovechkin

Some Twitter users in the US have called for the arrest of Russian hockey star Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals for exchanging him for Britney Grenier, an American basketball player held in Russia.

Grenier, a player on the Phoenix Mercury women’s NBA team, was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on February 18 on suspicion of trying to smuggle drugs into Russia.

According to Russian customs, Grenier’s bags were found to contain e-cigarettes and cannabis oil, and if convicted, she faces a prison term of five to ten years.

And CNN reported yesterday, Wednesday, that President Joe Biden is backing a proposal to exchange a Russian prisoner in Washington and businessman Viktor Bout for two American prisoners in Moscow, Grenier and Paul Whelan, convicted of espionage.

But some Americans on Twitter chose to arrest the Russian star Ovechkin and then trade him for the American Grenier, as one of the pioneers wrote: “Why don’t we detain Ovechkin under the pretext that he violated one of the national security laws, throw him in Guantanamo , and then sell to Russia?

Another user wrote: “The Griner trade is stupid while Ovechkin is roaming our streets.”

A third user offered a “quick fix” to free Grenier, writing: “We can get Grenier home before tomorrow. Just say that one day of Grenier’s imprisonment is equal to a month of Ovechkin’s ban from the United States.”

There were also those who did not share the opinion about the injustice of Grenier’s detention.
