American basketball star detained in Russia turned to Biden

Basketball star Britney Grenier, in a handwritten letter delivered to the White House, pleaded with President John Biden not to forget her cause after months spent in a Russian prison.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that the Washington Post published excerpts from the football player’s letter to the US President on Monday.

Russian authorities granted the US consulate access to Britney Grenier after a court ruled to extend the arrest of the basketball player on drug charges until December 20.

In his letter to Biden, the football player demanded her release and expressed fear that she would never be able to return home.

The basketball player urged Biden to do everything to help her release, saying: “I voted for the first time in 2020 and chose you. I trust you. I can do a lot of good if you help me get my freedom back.”

Grenier spent almost four months in a Russian prison.

NBA player Phoenix Mercury was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on February 17 on charges of drug possession.

Customs claims it was found in Grenier bags of e-cigarettes and cannabis oil.

Grenier faces a prison sentence of five to ten years.

With Team USA, Grenier won the 2014 World Championship in Turkey, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the 2018 World Championship in Spain and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Before her arrest, she played for the UMMC team from Yekaterinburg, Russia.
