89-year-old US senator re-elected for eighth term

Chuck Grassley, an 89-year-old Republican senator from Iowa since 1981, won the midterm elections to the U.S. Senate for an eighth term.

Chuck Grassley will turn 95 at the end of his new term. He fought his most intense rivalry in 42 years against former Democrat and Military Major Michael Franken.

This member of the Senate Judiciary Committee wanted to be the voice of rural America and the family farm, and he was a farmer himself.

This year, his campaign has focused on inflation. Former President Donald Trump supported him, even if he disagreed with him on a wide range of issues.

“I wouldn’t be smart if I didn’t accept the support of someone who has 91 percent of the Republican vote in Iowa,” Grassley said at a campaign rally attended by Trump last year.

Grassley served as president pro tempore of the Senate from 2019 to 2021 and was third in the line of succession in the event of a presidential incapacity, after the Democratic vice president and chairman of the House of Representatives.

He has been married for 68 years and has five children.
