7 people die in flooding caused by a river in southwest China

Seven people have died as a flood of water flowed from a river in a popular recreation area after a mountain rain in southwest China, authorities said on Sunday.

Workers and volunteers rallied to urge people to leave the area after receiving a warning of impending heavy rain around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the Pengzhou City Emergency Management Office.

China National Radio reported that one of those present at the scene said that several people, including children, were swept away when the flow of water in the lower reaches of the river suddenly increased in just 10 to 20 seconds.

On Sunday, Chengdu city officials said seven people had died and three others were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Pengzhou is a tourist area located 70 km north of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.

The video shows how a helicopter rescues a man stuck on a small bump just above the water.

Elsewhere in China, heavy rains flooded the streets of the northwestern city of Xining on Saturday evening.

Heavy rain and possibly heavy rain is expected in the northeast from Sunday to Monday afternoon, with 10 to 18 centimeters of rain expected in areas in Liaoning and Jilin provinces.
