14 people died in an armed attack on a prison in Mexico

14 people, including 10 guards, were killed in an armed attack on a prison in Mexico on the border with the United States, at least 24 prisoners escaped.

Chihuahua State Attorney’s Office said four people were also injured in the attack and that police arrested four people with the help of the army, without specifying whether they were escaped prisoners or the attackers.

The attack took place at dawn, when militants arrived in armored vehicles and opened fire on the guards, while the families of a number of prisoners were waiting to meet their relatives on the occasion of the New Year.

According to the materials of the preliminary investigation, the purpose of the attack was to facilitate the escape of a group of prisoners.

The prison, located in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, houses members of the armed branches of the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels, which have been fighting for control of the city for more than 15 years.
